EAST BRIDGEWATER, MA (PLYMOUTH COUNTY) - The East Bridgewater Fire Department responded to a report of a chimney fire at 763 Bedford Street (Route-18) around 0815 hours on the morning of Wednesday, December 30, 2009. First arriving companies reported smoke from the chimney of a 1.5-story wood framed occupied dwelling.
When companies entered the structure they found an active chimney fire in a 250-year old dutch oven in the center of the dwelling. Chief Ryon Pratt assumed command and reported a working chimney fire. Tower-1 set up in the driveway of the home and firefighters worked the chimney with chains.
A pre-connected line was charged off of Engine-3 as a precaution. Companies utilized extinguishers and the chimney chains to knock down the fire. Crews encountered difficulty in accessing the area that had the active fire due to the age and design of the stove.
In addition to the fire in the chimney, firefighters battled bitter cold. Temperatures at the time of the fire was approximately 11 degrees fahrenheit, with wind chills in the single digits.
The fire was contained to the chimney and knocked down within approximately one hour. East Bridgewater Engine-3, Engine-2, Tower-1, Ambulance-3, Car-5, S-2 and the Chief all responded to the incident.
