MALDEN, MA - A spectacular six alarm fire caused heavy damage to an apartment building and driving residents into the bitter cold just before 6am on Saturday, January 9, 2010.
First arriving companies found heavy fire showing from the fourth floor which rapidly extended to the fifth and roof area.
Firefighters rescued at least one occupant before having to cease interior operation and go into heavy steam appliances. Several ladder pipes and exterior handlines were put into use. Ladder companies also made a trench cut on the roof to try and block the extension of fire.
Several occupants were treated for smoke inhalation and two Firefighters were treated for non life threatening injuries. Displaced residents were transported to a nearby elementary school set up as a temporary shelter. The Red Cross was on hand to assist the occupants with temporary relocation.
The fire took over four hours to control and the cause is undetermined. Crews from several surrounding communities assisted at the fire and in covering Malden fire stations.
