EAST BRIDGEWATER, MA - An alert East Bridgewater DPW worker traveling on Crescent Street spotted smoke coming from the roof of 294 Crescent Street around 1:00 p.m. on the afternoon of Tuesday, January 5, 2010. The fire department was alerted and promptly responded.
When East Bridgewater Engine-3 arrived at the scene, the company officer reported heavy smoke showing from a dwelling and requested a working fire assignment. An aggressive interior attack was initiated. When Tower-1 arrived crews threw ground ladders and vented the roof of the one and a half story single family ranch style dwelling.
Interior crews worked on all floors of the home, extinguishing pockets of fire in the basement, first floor and attic area. After heavy fire vented through the roof of the home, and explosions could be heard from inside the home all companies were ordered out of the building. An additional engine was requested to the scene.
Crews reentered the home and were able to knock down the heavy fire on floor one. Companies spent an extensive amount of time opening up and overhauling to ensure that all the fire was extinguished.
East Bridgewater Engine-1, Engine-2, Engine-3, Tower-1, Ambulance-3 and S-1 were assisted by Whitman Engine-1, who acted as the RIT team, and a West Bridgewater engine company on the scene. A Bridgewater engine company covered East Bridgewater's Fire Station.
No one was home at the time of the blaze, but the families dog perished during the fire. No other injuries were reported. The cause of the afternoon blaze is still under investigation. The home was deemed uninhabitable due to the extent of the fire damage.
