DOUGLAS, MA - Firefighters, rescue squad, and medical personnel from three towns joined forces to resuce a young man from his overturned vehicle on Oak Street in Douglas on September 13th.
At about 10:30 p.m. on September 13, 2008 a call was received by Douglas Emergency Dispatchers reporting a bad motor vehicle accident in the area of 60 Oak Street. Fire and EMS were immediately dispatched. Upon the arrival of Douglas police officers, it was very apparent that the sole occupant of the car, the driver, was seriously injured and was in need of extrication to get him out of his overturned car. Firefighters and EMTs arrived on scene minutes later and went to work.
EMS personnel assessed their patient's condition upon arrival and immediately called for a paramedic response from Oxford EMS. About the same time, firefighters found themselves having difficulties with the extrication of the patient, and Fire Chief Donald Gonynor called for assistance from the Webster Rescue Squad. Ultimately, members of the Douglas FD were able to remove the young man from his vehicle before the Webster Rescue could arrive on scene.
The driver was taken by Douglas FD ambulance, with Oxford paramedics on board, to an undisclosed Worcester Hospital. His condition was unknown. Oak Street had to be closed down by Douglas police for about 90 minutes to protect emergency workers on scene, and to facilitate the removal of the car and the subsequent cleaning of debris from the roadway.
