WEBSTER, MA - At 1:36 AM on Wednesday, November 8, 2006, Webster Police Department Dispatch received a call reporting a possible structure fire at 27 East Main St. This building is a large 3 story combination commercial/residential structure with a realty business occupying the first floor and apartments occupying the upper floors. A first alarm was struck dispatching the on-call group from the Webster Fire Department as well as the Webster Rescue Squad.
Based on the reports from arriving officers of the Webster Police Department, a second alarm was struck prior to the FD arrival at 1:39 AM. The second alarm called in all groups of the Webster Fire Department as well as activated the Rapid Intervention Team from the Southbridge Fire Department. Arriving fire crews found heavy fire showing from several locations of the third floor of the building. Mutual aid engines were subsequently requested from the towns of Dudley and Oxford, with Oxford sending an Aerial Tower as well.
The fire was brought under control in about one hour while crews remained on scene until about 6AM. Troopers from the Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Fire Marshall's Office responded to the scene to assist in the investigation which as of the current time is still on-going. The Douglas Fire Department provided station coverage at Webster Fire Headquarters.
In total, 7 Engines, 2 Towers, and 3 Rescues responded with approximately 50 firefighters along with a Paramedic truck from Webster Emergency Medical Services. No civilians were injured, however two firefighters were transported to a local hospital with minor, non-life-threatening injuries.
