WORCESTER, MA - At approximately 7:00 p.m. on January 3, 2010 Worcester Fire Department received a call from 96 Sagamore Road reporting their top floor was on fire.
Engines 3, 16, 4 and 11 along with ladders 2 and 7 responded to the box. Engine 3 was first on scene reporting smoke showing from the third floor. Ladder 2 set up the stick on Monadnock Road while Ladder 7 took the "B" side on Sagamore. Ladder 7 began to have trouble with reaching the fire blowing out the window due to large trees.
Multiple attack lines were brought up the stairs on the "D" side because the "A" side stairs were under construction. Firefighters took an aggressive attack to the fire bring it under control.
Fire began to pick up again with heavy winds now blowing the fire out the vent holes that Ladder 2 had cut in the roof. A second alarm was struck at 7:30 p.m. bring Engine 13, Ladder 6 and Ladder 1 to the scene for manpower due to small fire spreading. Fire began to creep into the attic space but was well maintained by the crews inside.
Overhauling began about an hour after first crews began to work on scene. Unknown cause of fire at this time.
