EAST BRIDGEWATER, MA (PLYMOUTH COUNTY) - Around 2:40 a.m. in the early morning hours of Friday, January 8, 2010 the East Bridgewater Fire Department received a call reporting a motor vehicle accident on Bedford Street (Route-18) near Cottage Street. When the first companies arrived they found a single vehicle accident with the SUV off the road, on its side and against a tree and very close to a utility pole.
Upon further inspection of the vehicle it was discovered that the single occupant, a male, approximately twenty four years old, was heavily trapped in the vehicle. The OIC requested an additional set of jaws and extrication tools from Bridgewater. Their Engine-3 responded to assist East Bridgewater.
Due to the extent of the injuries to the patient, Boston MedFlight was requested to respond to landing zone eight. While crews worked to extricate the patient the Boston MedFlight crew was transported to the accident scene to assist.
Crews battled the cold and extrication challenges associated with this patient for approximately an hour and a half. After several attempts, the patient was finally extricated from the vehicle around 0415 hours. The East Bridgewater Ambulance transported the patient and the MedFlight crew back to the landing zone where he was flown to a Boston area hospital for treatment of his serious injuries.
At the time of the accident, the vehicle was apparently traveling south bound on Route-18 and lost control of the vehicle, traveled up a guard rail and flipped on to its drivers side, against a tree.
East Bridgewater Police were assisted on the scene by the Plymouth County Sheriffs Department. The police agencies are currently investigating the accident. No other injuries were reported.
