DOUGLAS, MA - A young male driver was seriously injured late Saturday night, August 19th, when the pick up truck he was driving left the roadway, flipped on its side and took down a tree in the area of 40 Wallis Road in Douglas. The vehicle came to rest against another pine tree, trapping the driver between the tree and his seat.
Firefighters and EMTs from the Douglas Fire Department were the first to respond, and immediately went to work trying to disentangle the young man. They soon summonsed paramedics from Oxford Fire as well as additional help from the Webster Rescue Squad to assist Douglas firefighters in extricating the seriously injured man.
The roof of the pick up truck had to be removed to gain access to the driver, then crew had to remove the steering wheel to free the victim. He was extricated to a long spine board, stabilized and secured, and brought by ambulance to the Douglas Fire Department where they were met by the medical flight crew of New England Life Flight. The patient was flown to UMass Hospital in Worcester, and was listed in critical condition.
The accident is under investigation by members of the Douglas Police Department.
