TAUNTON, MA (BRISTOL COUNTY) - Funeral services were held on "Flag Day" Saturday, June 14, 2008 for Army Sergeant Shane Patrick Duffy, 22, at Saint Mary's Church on Broadway in Taunton.
Duffy was killed on June 4th in Tikrit, Iraq when insurgents attacked his army unit. This was Duffy's second tour of duty.
Shane Duffy was the son of Taunton MA firefighter Kevin Duffy. Shane was on the list to be hired by the Taunton Fire Department when he returned from his tour of duty.
Firefighters from across the state came out to show their appreciation of Shane Duffy's service to his country as well as to mourn his tragic loss.
Other mourners included Massachusetts Senator John Kerry who eulogized the young soldier. Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick and Lieutenant Governor Tim Murray also attended the service.
Four different pipes and drums bands from the state participated in the service. Duffy's friends wore scally caps, as Duffy was a "good Irish-man". Duffy's flag draped casket was carried by a horse drawn carriage to the Saint Francis Cemetery. He was followed by many marchers, friends and family. The procession traveled down Taunton streets that were lined with hundreds of residents, most of them sporting American flags.
Duffy's family was presented with the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and many other medals and awards from his service to the country.
