Douglas, MA - Shortly after 6 PM on Tuesday December 12th, tones came across the pagers of all Douglas firefighters reporting a possible house on fire at 4 Walnut Street off Route 96. Douglas police officers arrived on scene to find the house was indeed on fire and the information was relayed to responding firefighters.
As first due firefighters arrived on scene, they found a heavy fire condition in the basement of a one-story cape, with the fire extending throughout the structure. As Douglas firefighters prepared to mount an aggressive interior attack, mutual aid assistance was summonsed for additional manpower and water supply, as well as a FAST team. The house was outside of the town’s hydrant district, and water had to be trucked in with tankers.
A crew from Douglas vented the roof of the structure as interior teams moved in on the “Red Devil”. Firefighters knocked all visible fire down very quickly, but had to chase down the fire in the walls. Extensive overhaul was needed in all levels of the home. The fire was brought under control in less than 90 minutes, and no injuries were reported.
Mutual aid from the towns of Uxbridge, Webster, Sutton, Northbridge, Harrisville (RI) and Pascoag (RI) responded, along with two rescues from the Webster Rescue Squad. The Oxford Fire Department covered the empty Douglas firehouse with an Engine and an ambulance.
The fire is being investigated by the Douglas Fire Department with assistance from the State Fire Marshals Office. No damage estimate was available, but the building appeared to be damaged extensively.
