Units Work on Opening Up the Second Story Floor to Expose Void Spaces
Bayfield, CO - Temperatures of 15ºF and a conglomeration of building additions and construction types hampered fire suppression efforts at Haggard’s Black Dog Tavern, located at 13544 County Road 240 in the Upper Pine River Fire Protection District. A call was received reporting a fire at the two-story tavern at 2128 hours on February 8th, 2005. First arriving units encountered a well developed fire on the first and second floors, and mutual aid was requested from the Durango Fire Rescue Authority in Durango, CO. Durango Fire responded with an engine and ladder truck, as well as a number of tankers.
While the bulk of visible flame was knocked down shortly after Upper Pine Fire’s arrival, the fire had penetrated a number of hidden void spaces between the first and second stories. The second story contained a number of occupied and unoccupied apartments. The search for the seat of the stubborn and smoky fire continued into the early morning hours.
A tanker shuttle was established to provide water for fire suppression. An Upper Pine Fire District engine was set up to draft out of a location along the Florida River, located approximately 1.5 miles north of the incident, to supply the tankers.
The labor intensive efforts of the units on scene finally managed to expose the voids and firefighters had the fire under control approximately three hours after arrival.
