IGNACIO, CO – On January 6th, 2006 at approximately 1136 hours, firefighters from the Los Pinos Fire District were dispatched to a report of a barn fire at 3205 County Road 510. First arriving units found a 30’x 40’ barn building well involved with an adjacent 12’x 8’ storage shed as an immediate exposure.
The barn building contained approximately 70 bails of hay, as well as horse feed and a small amount of farm equipment. The storage shed did suffer some minor fire extension, and was full of a large amount of pesticides and herbicides.
With the bulk of the fire knocked down, firefighters removed the corrugated tin from the roof and sides of the barn to access the burning hay bails. The property owner was able to assist in the extinguishment of the hay fire by utilizing a tractor to remove the bails from what remained of the structure and spread it out in an adjoining corral for final mop-up.
A tanker shuttle was utilized to provide water for fire suppression. Additional personnel and water tankers from the Upper Pine Fire District in Bayfield, CO and the Durango Fire and Rescue Authority responded on a request for mutual aid. The cause of the fire is under investigation at the time of this report.
