Mastic Fire Department 99th Annual Installation Dinner

RIVERHEAD, NY - On the evening of April 20th, the Mastic Fire District held the Mastic Fire Department’s 99th annual installation of officers at the Atlantis Banquets & Events Center in Riverhead. The installation dinner is held yearly to recognize the incoming and outgoing chiefs and officers, as well as honor the members for their achievements over the year and their overall time in the department. Awards are given out for top responses, top overnight responses and milestones for years of service to the department and to the community. The event was attended by members of the Mastic Fire Department, neighboring departments, Suffolk Fire Rescue Commissioner Patrick Beckley, Brookhaven Supervisor Panico and Suffolk Legislator Mazarella. 


The night's program began with the installation of the chiefs into office for the 2024 year. The Chief of the Department for this term is Steven Januszkiewicz and the Assistant Chief is Rudy M. Sunderman. The Chiefs were sworn in by Commissioner Rudolph Sunderman, Jr. The department lieutenants were sworn in next. 1st Lt. for 2024 is Tarren Kearns; 2nd Lt’s. are Ian Arthur, Mike Malone and Ryan Peters. The admin officers were sworn in by Chief Januszkiewicz and the Fire Police Officers were sworn in by Commissioners Rudolph Sunderman, Sr. and Rudolph Sunderman, Jr. The fire police officers are Fire Police Captain Willian Ponzi, 1st Lt. Fred Stalker, 2nd Lt. Craig Diaz.


After the installations concluded, outgoing Chief Gene Martucci presented awards to the top responders, and also along with current Chief Januszkiewicz there were presentations of special appreciation awards that were given to the outgoing 1st Lt. Jason Lasek and Outgoing Chief Gene Martucci. A 50 Years of Service award was presented to Donald Ruben, who could not be in attendance for the evening. Also, an astounding 70 Years of Service award was presented to Ex-Chief Peter Rosato. Ex-Chief Rosato was surrounded by his family when presented the award, which includes his son who is a department member, and his grandson, a former member of Mastic FD and now a Horry County firefighter in South Carolina. Awards were presented to the chiefs and officers of the Shirley and Mastic Ambulance companies who work in various capacities with the department on calls, including car accidents, structure fires and other calls.


Additional presentations were made to the Ladies Auxiliary President Sue Moylan, as well as the family of Department Chaplin Edwin Brooks. Chaplin Brooks served the department for many years in different roles and sadly passed away before the event. The awards portion ended with a presentation by Mastic Ambulance Company to the Mastic Fire Department.  


A great evening of celebration was had by all who attended.
